①“Black ink silence"
②“36 days in Shikano"
Emmanuel Régent
He lives in Villefranche-sur-Mer and Paris. A draughtsman, sculptor and painter. After a 2001 graduate of the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris, his work is regularly presented in galleries and institutions in France and abroad as part of solo exhibitions. He sands monochrome paintings, tears up his watercolors, harvests pieces of shipwreck underwater or draws for hours with a felt-tip pen in black ink queues, seaside rocks, archaeological remains or contemporary cities in ruins.
I'm very honored to be coming to Tottori, as Japan is a mysterious dream for French people of my generation, who were the first to discover Japanese cartoons during their childhood.
My drawing practice is not directly inspired by manga, but this influence must certainly be felt in the approach and composition of my works.
I'll be making the journey with a series of large-format black ink drawings (130x110 cm) produced in France for this first exhibition in Tottori, and then I plan to produce several projects on site during my residency for the second exhibition in Shikano.
First of all, I'd like to draw views of Tottori in felt-tip pen with black ink, trying to recapture the angles drawn by Jirô Taniguchi in "My Father's Diary".
I'd also like to draw the ruins of the castle and other subjects for which I don't yet know the theme, to let myself be inspired on the spot by the unexpected. I'd like to paint watercolors of sunsets live in the evening and tear them up on the spot. I'll also be looking for pieces of wreckage or other poetic objects and subjects underwater, to display alongside the drawings and watercolors.
