WEEK 1
Theme:“A World Where Violence Is Exposed,
the Possibilities of Contemporary Theatre”
Russia's invasion of Ukraine has shocked the world with its change of the status quo by force and its challenge to the established international order, making the world's future uncertain. A piece inspired by the works of Brecht (1898-1956) will be performed in the first week, and a work by Dürrenmatt (1921-1990) will be performed over two weekends. Both playwrights reflected through theatre on great social forces (politics, economy, war) that play upon human beings. The first week of BIRD Theatre Festival will examine how theatre has responded to political, economic, and war situations from multiple perspectives, based on the works of the two playwrights.

WEEK 2
Theme:“Live Together, Live Beautifully”
"Disability" turns relationships between people, which should be diverse and sensitive, into something flimsy through assumptions and labels. It is not only a problem for people with "disabilities" but also everyone living in society. There is beauty in everyone's diverse ways of life and existence, regardless of whether they have a "disability" or not, and valuing that diverse beauty will change society into a better place. The second week will feature a joint performance by TBTB from the US and JIYU Gekijo-Freedom Theatre produced by BIRD Theatre Company. It will also welcome ITO Asa (Professor at the Institute for Liberal Arts, Tokyo Institute of Technology) and others to discuss issues in contemporary society through the subject of "disability".

WEEK 3
Theme:“Express, Give It a Try, Produce”
The third week will focus on the joy of creation and will offer a variety of workshops. The 20th century was the age of consumption. Convenience and fulfilment brought about by material goods motivated many people. BIRD Theatre Festival has held workshops every year with the belief that "creating and interacting with others through creation" is the power of the 21st century. This year, workshops will be arranged in five fields, and two overseas artists will be invited for practice. This week, In the Womb, directed by ITO Masanori, will be presented as part of "Performing Arts in Nature - Looking to the Future of the World". It is a joint project with Toga, Shizuoka, and Toyooka to nurture the next generation of theatre directors. American contemporary short plays will also be introduced.
