BATIK [From Tokyo, Japan]

The book with the same title of this work displays how the weight leans on the words with the birdcall. It also depicts the situation that only two birds get separated from the belief and the whole circumstances are left untold. These kept me sticking into my heart. I really wanted to make this into dance performance. While many things have been changing, I am so afraid of that the weight gets rid of the words and movements out of our bodies. Since I keep doing dance which is probably useless, I have this feeling that I have strayed from the circle of the society. Dance doesn’t have to deal with words; it is okay for dance to be useless. There are not enough scars of dance for me to make me believe it. Besides that, without doing dance to pray now, I cannot go forward. When I do the dance to pray, I would love to hold natural voices and exceptions in my both hands.

KURODA Ikuyo (Artistic Director of BATIK, Choreographer and Dancer)

Kuroda Ikuyo started a classic ballet at the age of six. She went to England in 1997 to study contemporary dance. In 2002, she founded BATIK. Based on the ballet techniques, her choreography style is so extreme and dynamic that she could push herself into the ultimate limit. That connects with the impulse that dance originally possesses. Consequently, her choreography has been favoured beyond genres.
