"BIRD" Theatre Festival TOTTORI 11

Symposium

“Sharing the Time of Life :
Disability and Theatrical Art”

BIRD Theatre has been proposing what the new inclusive life should be through theatre arts. For instance, it has produced “JIYU Gekijo-Freedom Theatre” both for disabled and able-bodied people to create a theatre performance together. Also, the artistic expressions by disabled people have been receiving remarkable attention towards the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games all over Japan. The feature of theatrical art is that performers and audience share the same time and space. Then what would be born out of it and become part of our interaction with each other? What kind of social value would exist there? In this year’s theatre festival, a symposium will be held in two parts along with the theatre performance. We would like to think about the meaning of disabled people participating in the theatrical art and examine how to continue our activity to let many people enjoy it from various points of view.

Session 1 “Practice in the Oversea : Focus on American Cases and Think”

Speaker: Nicholas Viselli (Artistic Director of TBTB)

Listener: NAKASHIMA Makoto (Artistic Director of BIRD Theatre Company)

Nicholas Viselli , the artistic director of TBTB performing in the first weekend, will be invited as a speaker. He will introduce activities of TBTB at Off-Broadway. He will talk about the origin and transition of their activities in New York, the United States where has the historical and social conditions. This talk would bring you a chance to think about the possibility and tasks of theatrical expression activities by people with disabilities from a new angle. He will also discuss about an overview and features regarding activities of theatre companies of disabled people both in the United States and other places by giving us some examples from some of those leading theatre companies.

Session 2 “Practice in Japan: To Be More Familiar with Theatrical Art”

Speaker: KRIS Yoshie (Director of an NPO “SLOW LABEL”)

Speaker: SUZUKI Kyoko (Executive Art Producer of the International Communication Center for Persons with Disabilities “BIG-i”)
Listener: KAWAIDA Sachiko (Professour of Tottori University)

SLOW LABEL has a project called “SLOW MOVEMENT” that they have eagerly discovered and nurtured. It not only features performers with disabilities but also “access coordinators” and “accompanists”. BIG-i has encouraged the support of this programme for appreciation. For example, they carry out a programme for children with intellectual disabilities or developmental disorder to experience the theatre.

By looking at attempts of those two organizations, we would like to think about how to make the ratio of disabled and able-bodied people who are familiar with theatre arts equal to the ratio of them in the entire society.
