We have been in a good relationship with Seung-gon LEE, a theatre researcher in Korea since we made “Classroom of Poem”, the co-production work with the Korean Theatrical Company TUIDA. Seung-gon LEE belongs to Korea National University of Arts in Soul which is the first national art university in Korea. He asked us if he could bring an outstanding work by the students of the university, so we happily accepted his offer. Unfortunately, Tokyo University of the Arts still doesn’t have the department of theatre arts, by the way.
This work deals with the struggle and solidarity of a Korean family living abroad as a minority. Father and mother came to America to seek for new land to live when they were young. Although it has already been thirty years since then, they still live as outsiders with the Korean value. Their daughter and son were born in America. Therefore, they are Korean-American, that leads them to struggle with their double identity. They try hard alone to have a settled life. This story displays the amplitude of conflict in an ordinary family, which will bring you a question; Is it possible for a person to live completely as a owner of himself/herself, leaving the identity provided by the society behind?
