“Butoh” is a dance art form that originated in post-war Japan and has since spread worldwide. This lecture-performance explores its current state, moving back and forth between verbal lecture and physical demonstration. Drawing on Butoh’s historical background and philosophical questions, it invites the audience to reconsider “what Butoh is” together through a live body and dance. Rather than separating explanation and performance, Butoh as knowledge and Butoh as physical practice emerge, mutually permeating one another. In this process, the question expands into a questioning of the body itself. In today’s world, where information and images come first, can the body exist as a body, and where is Butoh heading? This piece critically examines the present state of Butoh.
